Battery jump pack safety tips

Keeping your battery jump pack safe and in good condition is vital.

What is a battery jump pack?

Battery jump packs are usually lithium-based batteries designed to be used as a jump-start for your car’s battery.

Lithium is the key ingredient?

Lithium batteries are used in many applications - from torches, laptops, hybrid and micro-hybrid motor vehicles, and home battery banks all the way to battery jump starter packs.

Most of these applications will see the lithium battery being used and cycled daily, or even more frequently, and the usage will be a slow drain off of power to supply the appliance.

However, this is very different to a battery jump pack.

How a battery jump pack works

Battery jump packs can be left for periods of time without use, and when used they are subjected to very fast and high discharge rates.

This makes it imperative that they are maintained and used correctly.

Safety tips

Please always read the manufactures information that is supplied with these packs when new.

Some other safety tips are:

·         Keep Charged at least every 3-6 Months

·         DO NOT jump start a vehicle if less than 3 indicators are lit up or jump pack displays less than 60% charged on display.

·         DO NOT connect the positive and negative poles to the opposite pole or connect the two clamps together or an accident may occur.

·         DO NOT overload - a maximum cranking time of 3 seconds, Battery Jumper Packs are made to start vehicles where the battery has failed or been flattened and NOT DIFFICULT TO START ENGINES. If the engine does not start in 3 seconds, stop cranking and wait at least 30 seconds before attempting to start the vehicle again!

·         DO NOT Disassemble the Battery Pack or use it as a vehicle battery or an accident may occur!

·         DO NOT Crush the product or put it in a fire or an accident may occur!

·         KEEP AWAY from Children to avoid any accident.

Any swelling of the Battery Jump Pack indicates that it has been damaged by incorrect use, if swelling of the Pack is observed either return to place of purchase or a responsible recycle point and most importantly DO NOT USE OR CHARGE!

When used improperly and/or against the recommended use, it may result in injury or death and will void your warranty.

More points

Other points to observe to maintain your lithium battery jumper pack are:

1.      Avoid leaving unattended whist charging,

2.      Do not allow the Jumper Packs to get below 60% charged

3.      They must never be left in high temperature situations exceeding 60 degrees Celsius.

4.      Only Charge with the correct charger designed for the battery pack never use a charger with a higher voltage rating.

5.      Do not disassemble or allow the separate cells to short against each other's terminals.

Following these basic precautions will both prolong the life of your Jump starter pack and also prevent a potentially hazardous situation.
