Important signs your engine mount needs replacing

It’s no secret that the main purpose of an engine mount is to mount the engine into your car. But that simple job description hides the huge importance behind this task. This is because the engine mount absorbs all the shocks and vibrations caused when operating your engine – which, if you look at it another way, is one heavy piece of machinery!

This means the simple engine mount has implications for comfort, ride, balance, and performance.

So, how do we know when our engine mounts need replacing?

1. Ignition

Yep, the first sign your engine mount might need replacing comes from the very first thing you do when you get in your car.

Keep an eye out and check if you notice any excessive forward or lurching movement, something that doesn’t sound healthy, or a rough rattle when you turn the car on.

2. Vibration

Increased vibrations are definitely not welcome in your engine.

If you start the car, or it’s running, or you’re at idle at the lights, make sure you aren’t getting any more forceful or eventful vibrations than normal.

3. Noise

Similar to vibration, we want to keep it sounding normal.

Excess noise in the form of clunks or jolts, thumps and humps are what we DON’T want to be noticing.

4. Ride

This one is all about the feel.

How comfortable is your ride? If you notice things like jolts, thuds, or bumps when changing gears, travelling at high speed, or if it just doesn’t feel as smooth as you remember – this could be your problem.

5. Visuals

Sometimes, your eyes are the best tool.

Have a look at the engine mount and surrounding area. If you see any type of corrosion, crack, warp, or anything funky then this could point to a problem with the engine mount.

Luckily this doesn’t need to be too scary!
